When you see clearly and sharply, it’s much easier to go about everything in your daily life, both work and recreation. At Orange Coast Eye Center, we recommend a yearly eye exam for all our valued patients. If you’re currently straining to see at a distance, you’re experiencing blurred distance when focusing on things nearby, or you have less than optimal vision at all distances, you may very well need a pair of corrective lenses. And if you already wear eyeglasses or contact lenses, you might benefit from an updated prescription. Conditions such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism tend not to improve over time. Instead, you are more likely to need a stronger prescription in order to keep seeing as well as possible. In addition, you should be screened for common eye diseases annually. Typically, eye diseases form and progress without any symptoms to alert you to their presence. By the time you notice symptoms, it could mean that you have already suffered damage to your eyes or a loss of vision that may not be recoverable. That’s why we want you to understand the importance of our eye exams in Fountain Valley.
In order to determine what, if any, prescription you need, various tests will be done. A visual acuity test, in which you read from an eye chart, a refraction test, and a visual field test are all vital components. The importance of our eye exams in Fountain Valley is illustrated in our thorough of measuring how well you see at all distances as well as side to side (your peripheral vision). Other tests, such as for color vision, may be done if you have a family history of color blindness or are currently having difficulties in distinguishing colors.
Among the common eye diseases that you will be screened for are glaucoma and cataracts. Tonometry gauges your eye pressure to determine if glaucoma is present. A slit-lamp test is the baseline for cataracts. Other tests may be conducted as needed to form a definite diagnosis. If you are over 60, you will also be tested for macular degeneration. And anyone with diabetes, either type 1 or type 2, will have a screening for diabetic retinopathy. Early detection if associated with the best outcomes for most diseases, including those of they eye. This shows the importance of our eye exams in Fountain Valley.

Fountain Valley Glaucoma Treatment
At our state-of-the-art eye care practice, we work to maintain and improve the vision of all members of your family. Our practice, Orange Coast Eye Center, has a highly-trained, devoted staff that is committed to providing expert and compassionate eye care. We have provided the highest level of care in the Orange County community for over 30 years. One of the many services we provide our patients with is Fountain Valley glaucoma treatment.
Our ophthalmologist, Dr. Lincoln L. Manzi, has helped many people in the community in his over 30 years of service as an eye doctor. He has provided glaucoma diagnosis and treatment for many of his patients who have this eye condition. Glaucoma is actually a group of eye conditions that all result in optic nerve damage. This damage can go on to eventually cause a loss of vision. Unusually high pressure inside your eye is often the reason this damage is caused. However, it is not the only condition that can cause glaucoma. Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness, so it is very important to seek Fountain Valley glaucoma treatment if diagnosed. Glaucoma can cause very gradual vision problems so often patients do not even notice symptoms until it is in an advanced state. Vision lost to glaucoma cannot generally be restored, so it is very important to have your vision tested at recommended intervals. The most common type of glaucoma is open-angle glaucoma and its only symptom is gradual vision loss. If diagnosed and treated early, we are able to prevent or minimize optic nerve damage and limit vision loss. Our eye doctor will test you for glaucoma by measuring your intraocular pressure. Other tests are also performed.
With glaucoma, the patient will slowly lose peripheral vision. Risk factors include age, race, elevated eye pressure, a family history, and some diseases such as diabetes. Dr. Manzi needs to evaluate, on an individual basis, if and what kind of Fountain Valley glaucoma treatment a patient will need. Complete glaucoma evaluation includes: measuring intra ocular pressure; measuring the thickness of your cornea; and looking at the drainage angle of your eye. We also test for optic nerve damage and use computerized imaging to aid in this process. Once diagnosed, treatment for glaucoma can include drops, but also may call for specialized glaucoma laser surgery. If you would like to meet with Dr. Manzi regarding glaucoma, or other eye health concerns, call Orange Coast Eye Center today for an appointment.
