The physicians at Orange Coast Eye Center have all received advanced training the diagnosis and management of diseases of the retina, vitreous, and macula. Their clinical expertise and surgical experience allow us to successfully treat a variety of diseases of the retina for our patients in Newport Beach, Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach, and beyond. Our Newport Beach ophthalmologists are committed to offering cutting-edge retinal treatments, so that we can provide our patients with the best care.

The retina is the light-sensitive tissue lining the back of our eye. Light rays are focused onto the retina through our cornea, pupil, and lens. The retina converts the light rays into electrical impulses that travel through the optic nerve to our brain where we can interpret the images. The retina performs a vital job and when healthy, we have clear vision. However, many eye diseases can affect the connection between the retina and the brain, causing problems in our vision.

One of the most serious eye conditions that our Newport Beach eye surgeons treat at Orange Coast Eye Center is age-related macular degeneration. Macular degeneration is the deterioration of the central retina, the macula, which can lead to decreased vision in older patients and oftentimes blindness. The macula is responsible for central vision, which is vital for reading, driving, and recognizing faces. Macular degeneration may be manifest by symptoms such as blurriness, dark areas in central vision, distortion of central vision, and permanent loss of central vision. Ordinarily, a patient will not experience peripheral vision loss if they have macular degeneration. Individuals over the age of sixty are at risk for macular degeneration, but it can appear as early as forty.

There are two types of macular degeneration, wet and dry macular degeneration. Wet age-related macular degeneration can be treated with laser eye surgery, photodynamic therapy and injections into the eye, performed at Orange Coast Eye Center. Unfortunately, these treatments are not a cure for macular degeneration. However, early treatment of dry macular degeneration can delay and possibly prevent the disease from progressing to an advanced stage, in which vision loss occurs. To learn more about macular degeneration and other eye disease, please visit Orange Coast Eye Center and speak with our Newport Beach eye surgeons.
